There is a fundamental question that must precede all other when it comes to making the decision to own a pet. That question is: Does the person who will ultimately be responsible for the dog's care and well-being actually want a pet? If the answer is anything less than a firm "Yes," stop there. Perhaps they should consider something else instead. If the prospective owner lives alone, the only thing necessary is a strong desire to make the commitment that pet ownership entails. In the case of family households, however, it becomes a situation that should be discussed among all members.

In the average household, mothers - even working mothers - are often most given the additional responsibility of caring for the family pet, which includes grooming, feedings, and veterinary care.

Although pets are a wonderful method of teaching children responsibility, it should be remembered that the enthusiasm that inspires children to promise anything in order to have a new pet may quickly wane. Who will take care of the pet once the novelty wears off and does that person actually want the responsibility of caring for a pet?

The desire to own a pet aside, does the prospective family's lifestyle allow for responsible pet ownership? If the entire family is away from home from early morning to late at night, who will provide for all of the pet's needs? Necessities like feeding, exercise, outdoor access and so on cannot be provided if no one is home. A lot of things must be considered in owning a pet.
